It's a familiar and garish sight — car after car with "Spring Break 2008" or "Padre or Bust" scrawled across the windows in white shoe polish crossing the bridge on highway 100 to South Padre Island. Padre has always been a spring break party animal's paradise. Students reserve hotel rooms in an effort to live even more cheaply than they do back at college. Therefore, rates triple from mid to late March and the island is overrun with partying 20-somethings.

The other 11 1/2 months of the year are perfect for vacationing families and honeymooners. This beach is for the value-conscious traveler. Although the town offers little in the way of luxury or entertainment, there are scores of moderately priced and budget accommodations, including well-known chains and one-of-a-kind motels with more charm than class. Restaurants, bars, shops and a movie theater add to the atmosphere. Water sports abound; just wander the bayside to find combination bar and grills/water sport rental outfits, like Coconuts and Parrot Eyes, that offer deep-sea fishing, diving, dolphin watches and other ecological excursions. Both the town and the beach are clean and safe.

Off the coast of South Texas, Padre remains pleasant when the rest of the state is at its coldest. Because of its moderate winter climate, Padre Island is home away from home to hundreds of "winter Texans" — retirees who spend the colder months in campers and condos on the island.

South Padre is the #1 U.S. Spring Break destination and is featured on the travel channel best beaches, Girls Gone Wild and E! TV Wild on Spring Break. Padre is just 30 miles north of the Mexico border, making it the only destination to party at 2 nations with one vacation!

Padre is famous for hosting some of the hottest spring break parties, concerts and acts including; MTV, 50 Cent, Ludacris, D-12, Fat Joe, Hawaiian Tropic and Girls Gone Wild! Padre is your “someplace different,” located on the Gulf of Mexico, at the southernmost tip of Texas. Padre is fun, inexpensive and offers something for everyone!

Why Choose South Padre Island for Spring Break?

Spring Break Info

Dining and Drinking

There are plenty of restaurants to satisfy all budgets. From fast food to fine dining, South Padre offers it all. The legal drinking age in Texas is 21 yrs. of age. Most bars will allow entry at 18 yrs. of age. Some hotels require at least one person to be 18yrs or older for check-in.

Dress Code

Technically, there isn't one in Padre. Wear shorts, pants, sandals or shoes, the choice is up to you. The nights can get a bit cool and we recommend that you bring a sweater or light jacket.

Electrical System

South Padre offers the same electrical outlets as you'll find in your own home.

Government

South Padre is located in the State of Texas within the United States and is governed by the same rules, regulations and laws found in the United States of America.

Language

English is the primary language and Spanish is the second language.

Money

The U.S. dollar is the accepted form of currency.

Phone Calls

South Padre phone calls are the same as if dialing from home. Hotels may have a surcharge, so inquire at your hotel before making a long distance call. Pay phones and your own cell phone are the most economical methods of phone communication.

Prescription Drugs

Keep all medication with you at all times. Do not put it in with your checked luggage and keep them in their prescription bottle.

Time Zone

South Padre operates on Central Standard Time, changing accordingly with the Daylight savings time.

Tipping

Every dollar counts when you are a college student, but please don't forget to tip the people who are good to you; bartenders, waitresses, maids and bellboys. The general custom is to tip 15% on restaurants and bar bills, $2 (US) per person for bellboys and $2 (US) per room/per night for maids.

Transportation

The town offers a FREE shuttle system called "the wave" that runs from 7am to 9pm. Taxis are readily available in South Padre and tipping the driver is not expected. Never share a taxi with strangers nor allow the driver to pick up additional passengers. Taxis never cost more then $4 regardless of where you get picked up or dropped off. Depending on your hotel locations, you may be within walking distance to many of the area attractions.

Vendors/Locals

Most stores are open from 10am to 10pm Monday through Saturday.

Weather

Most of the days in March and April are filled with sunshine and an average temperature around 80 degrees.
